Additional Details

Large eighteenth-century manuscript survey of a large tract of land certified by state surveyor general Peter Bremar for landowner Thomas Jones. The plat describes Jones's parcel extending southwest from the junction of the South Fork of the Edisto River and Shaw Creek (near present day Aiken State Park). The survey includes several period roads: to Columbia, from Charleston to Augusta, and Charleston to Long-Cane. We also find a peppering of quips describing the land: Well watered country and good rice land in the swamps, the land in this part is well stocked with pine timber, oak & hickory land with good pine timber, several excellent springs on the heads of the branches, several good mill seats on this creek, etc.
